Starting in the fall you may notice your child start to complain of aches and pains. Schedule and activity changes can cause legitimate complaints that should not be ignored. Many sports seasons begin in the fall and children can strain muscles while practicing or during a game.
Heavy backpacks can also cause stress on one’s back, neck or shoulders. Some guidelines recommend a child only carry 10-15% of their bodyweight in the backpack and this includes the weight of the backpack itself. Make sure your child is using both shoulder straps when carrying their backpack, to evenly distribute the weight.
Headache complaints are also common when children return to school. This increase could be affected by the stress of making new friends, academics, change in schedule, lack of sleep, or poor hydration. Adequate amount of sleep is important. Elementary school-age children should be getting 10 to 11 hours of sleep per night. Encourage your child to drink spring water, instead of soda or drinks full of sugar, to keep their body hydrated and healthy!
